Lockheed Martin BlueThe Federal Aviation Administration has approved Lockheed Martin‘s plan to certify the company’s hybrid airship project.

That project specific certification plan describes how Lockheed will carry out the hybrid criteria approved by the FAA in April 2013, Lockheed said Tuesday.

“The approval of the certification plan represents an important risk reduction milestone for our customers,” said Robert Boyd, a Lockheed program manager.

Lockheed developed the new set of criteria for non-rigid hybrid airships to operate in commercial work.

Transport Canada also helped Lockheed develop the criteria with Canadian safety concerns in mind.
