DRS Technologies has transported the first Hybrid Electric Drive system to the South Korean navy for installation in the military branch’s future frigate.
The navy will incorporate the HED system into the FFX Batch II frigate to reduce noise in the propulsion plant operation, DRS said Tuesday.
Roger Sexauer, president of the DRS maritime and combat support systems group, said HED is one of the systems that the company aims to provide as support for Korean naval programs.
According to DRS, eight FFX II ships are scheduled for construction.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering built the first frigate, while DRS Power Technology also developed the motors.
