Stephen Lewia, who joined Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in 2012, has been appointed mission area executive for strategic deterrence at the Maryland-based research and development organization.

He most recently served as deputy mission area executive at APL’s force projection sector, where he coordinated internal operations and oversaw technical reviews and reports for laboratory sponsors, APL said Wednesday.

“Steve’s appointment is made in recognition of his domain expertise, demonstrated executive leadership and exceptional reputation in the strategic deterrence community,” said Lisa Blodgett, APL’s force projection sector head.

Lewia also worked for almost 20 years at the U.S. Navy, where he supported technical programs and served as a member of the military branch’s strategic systems programs board of directors.
