cybersecurityThe National Institute of Standards and Technology is looking for industry partners to help create and demonstrate a standards-based reference technology design for the protection of wireless medical infusion pumps against cyber threats.

NIST said Thursday its National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence seeks modules for an end-to-end sample platform intended to help healthcare organizations and clinicians avoid unauthorized access and unintended errors related to infusion pumps.

In a notice posted Jan. 25 on the Federal Register, NIST called on interested vendors to offer products or technical services that can support an infusion pump use case for the healthcare industry.

“This use case begins the process to identify the actors interacting with infusion pumps, define the interactions between the actors and the system, perform a risk assessment, identify applicable mitigating security technologies and provide an example implementation,” the agency noted.

Participants will be asked to enter into cooperative research and development agreements with the agency.

NIST added the initiative will lead to the publication of guidance for the healthcare community to evaluate security of infusion pumps in clinical settings.
