softwareGovReady PBC has received $1.1 million in funds from the Department of Homeland Security to provide tools for a DHS project that aims to help companies offer their software and information technology systems in the federal market.

DHS’ science and technology directorate said Tuesday the Security Controls Compliance Server project’s goal is to simplify the certification and accreditation process agencies use in the evaluation process with emphasis on companies that participate for the first time.

“The C&A process is essential, but, in its current state, unnecessarily difficult for small businesses to navigate,” said Dr. Dan Massey, a program manager at DHS.

The department awarded the contract through a 2014 broad agency announcement and as part of the Homeland Open Security Technology program, which focuses on open source methods and technologies to protect government computer networks.

GovReady will also assess whether the certification and accreditation process can help bring open source software under compliance with Federal Information Security Management Act standards.
