Rob Weiss, executive vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin‘s Skunk Works business, said the company has invested a “significant” amount of money to further develop a nuclear fusion-based power generation system, Defense News reported Tuesday.

Aaron Mehta writes Skunk Works officials first disclosed the project in 2014 and they said at the time the organization was working on portable reactor that could potentially generate up to 100 megawatts of power.

Mehta noted he believes a small nuclear fusion technology has the potential to produce energy needed to operate fighter jets, advanced sensors, directed energy weapons or spacecraft.
