Virginia-class-submarineNorthrop Grumman has partnered with Ultra Electronics to integrate maritime domain and anti-submarine warfare systems into Northrop’s portfolio of autonomous platforms.

The companies aim to build long-endurance systems equipped with sensors and open mission architectures as well as persistent acoustic surveillance technology for use in maritime intelligence missions, Northrop said Monday.

Brian Chappel, vice president of autonomous systems at Northrop Grumman, said the alliance seeks to combine Ultra Electronics’ expertise in developing surface and undersea acoustic surveillance systems with Northrop’s autonomous system development experience to help increase “global maritime safety, security and domain awareness.”

Northrop and Ultra Electronics plan to jointly hold technology demonstrations during 2016 to present  autonomous systems that are designed to monitor large bodies of water and littoral areas over a long period of time.
