The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants industry partners to support a potential $80 million Defense Department investment for physical security updates at close to 900 recruiting centers across 70 metropolitan areas, Military Times reported Wednesday.
Jeff Schogol writes the Corps plans to install cubical walls with ballistic protection at a capacity to stop 7.62-millimeter rounds as well as visual identification features, access-control mechanisms and other updates to help secure the buildings.
DoD started the initiative in response to last year’s shootings in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Military Times also reported the U.S. Army has also provided ballistic protection capacity to 90 percent of its standalone recruiting centers and will look to pursue bullet-resistant protection strategies for its recruiting workplaces.
