Esri Introduces Web Map Collection to Show NOAA Forecast Streamflow Data; Edward Clark Comments

EsriEsri has unveiled a collection of web maps that displayed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s forecast streamflow data for the continental U.S.

Esri said Thursday the maps combine the company’s ArcGIS functionality with NOAA’s National Water Model data to provide interactive views of current and predicted water system behaviors through multiscale web map applications designed to display forecast water flows in real time.

The company mapped the flow of water along 2.7 million stream segments in the country’s river network to help NOAA assist emergency responders, reservoir operators, ecosystem professionals and floodplain managers through detailed information on flood and drought conditions.

“In collaboration with our academic partners, the Esri team supported the development process leading up to the launch of the National Water Model,” said Edward Clark, NOAA National Water Center geo-intelligence division director.

The company noted it aims to continue its investments on water prediction and analysis through the release of an open-source toolkit designed to help ArcGIS analyze data and create custom maps from water model records later this year.

NOAA implemented the National Water Model in August to generate water forecast information and simulate water movements in the country’s rivers and streams.
