an-spn-50-v1-shipboard-air-traffic-radarA Saab Group subsidiary will provide three shipboard air traffic radar systems to the U.S. Navy over a four-year period under an initial engineering and manufacturing development contract.

The Navy will deploy AN/SPN-50 (V)1 radars from Saab Defense and Security USA on the military branch’s aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships to replace the current AN/SPN-43C model, the company said Wednesday.

The SPN-50 system is designed to deliver aircraft position, radar signal and weather data for air traffic controllers can use to manage aircraft sequencing, airspace identification and containment services.

“The U.S. Navy is increasingly called upon to support missions involving manned and unmanned aviation operations,” said Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab Defense and Security USA.

Smith added the SPN-50 system will aid air traffic controllers on joint coalition forces support missions across the full range of military operations in all weather conditions.
