H. Brian Thompson, founder and executive chairman of GTT Communications, has received an award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for his contributions in efforts to establish communications quality, reliability and security.

The company said May 31 IEEE’s Communications Society Technical Committee on Communications Quality & Reliability awarded Thompson this year’s CQR Chairman's Award in recognition of his leadership in the development of telecommunications technologies toward greater access to quality communications.

“This accolade is a testament to the shared vision of my colleagues and peers as we continue to work together to evolve our industry, improve and expand infrastructure and address the dynamic regulatory environment to deliver innovative communication services to people and organizations on a global basis,” said Thompson.

GTT added IEEE presented the CQR Chairman's Award during the IEEE CQR 2017 event in May.

Thompson founded McLean, Virginia-based GTT and has served as the executive chairman of its board of directors since October 2006.

He has held the roles of chairman, president and CEO at private equity investment and advisory firm Universal Telecommunications Inc. since 1991 and is a member of the Global Information Infrastructure Commission’s executive committee.

The telecommunications industry veteran also chaired other companies such as Comsat International, Global TeleSystems Group and LCI International.
