U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Frederick Roegge, former commander of submarine forces at the U.S. Pacific Fleet, has assumed duties as president of the National Defense University.

NDU said Monday Roegge will lead the university’s efforts to train future joint warfighters and national security leaders with the use of whole-of-nations and whole-of-government educational programs, research and engagement activities.

He will succeed U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Frederick Padilla, who held the position of NDU president over the past three years.

Roegge previously served as a deputy commander for the U.S. 6th Fleet and the Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike at the Strategic Command.

He also worked as commander of Submarine Group 8 as well as director of operations and intelligence at the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, the military personnel plans and policy division and the Total Force Manpower Division on the U.S. Navy Staff.
