Battelle has selected Dr. John Lechleiter, former president, CEO and chairman of Eli Lilly and Company, to its board of directors, the Columbus, Ohio, firm said Monday.
Initially joining Eli Lilly as an organic chemist, Lechleiter stayed with the company for decades and went on to hold the top leadership role for nine years before his retirement. At the helm, Lechleiter insisted upon a strong research and investment pipeline, oversaw new product development and helped the company prosper in a highly competitive industry. Eli Lilly currently enjoys revenues of more than $20B.
“John’s proven ability to deliver growth has earned him a strong reputation within the pharmaceutical and science community,” commented John Welch, Battelle’s chairman of the board. “He brings an extensive track record of maintaining a strong focus on driving innovation, while defining and implementing growth strategies. We’re delighted he’s joining the Battelle board.”
Lechleiter added, “I’m honored and excited to join the Battelle board. Battelle is a unique organization of immense importance to this nation’s R&D infrastructure, working with its customer base to solve important problems across a range of disciplines, including the life sciences. I look forward to contributing as a board member.”
“John’s strong scientific pedigree and business experience directly aligns to Battelle’s business model and strategic priorities,” said Lou Von Thaer, Battelle’s president and CEO, and a three-time Wash100 winner. “He will be a valuable addition to our board.”
Lechleiter also sits on the board of directors for Nike Inc. and Ford Motor Co.
