Kevin Fahey, assistant defense secretary for acquisition, has said the Department of Defense considers implementing a cybersecurity certification process for contractors within the next year, Nextgov reported Thursday.

The process aims to ensure that vendors comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s cybersecurity framework and related standards.

“That will be the first step, which is a huge step,” he said of the NIST standard compliance at the Charleston Defense Contractors Association Summit in South Carolina.

“Then, how do we change the NIST to maybe be even more encompassing to make sure we’re doing things?,” he added.
