Air Force Teams Up With Pivotal, Agencies to Speed Up Software Deployment

The U.S. Air Force partnered with Pivotal Software, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the Defense Innovation Unit to accelerate the development and deployment of software capabilities through an experimentation laboratory, Federal News Network reported Friday.

The Kessel Run Experimentation Lab opened in May 2018 in Boston and allows Air Force personnel to work with their civilian counterparts on software development efforts.

“An example of how the new lab’s culture contradicts the military’s is by ‘pushing down’ decision-making to the front lines, as opposed to making everyone follow a pecking order,” said Simon Holroyd, head of the Pivotal Labs space.

The Kessel Run software development team built a platform called Kronos as part of the Mad Hatter effort, which aims to address maintenance issues with the F-35 fighter aircraft.
