Halo X-ray Technologies has secured a $1.6M contract from the Department of Homeland Security to build an automatic system for identifying potential threats inside travelers' checked and carry-on bags.

DHS' science and technology directorate issued the award under a broad agency announcement that sought advanced technology platforms designed to increase the performance of X-ray screening equipment and prevent false alarms, the department said Thursday.

The company aims to produce an integrated platform that would resolve alarms without manual intervention.

Nottingham, England-based HXT will work to combine an X-ray diffraction system and automatic threat resolution tools into a dual-view screening platform being used at airports. The company's system employs a focal construct technology that was jointly developed by Nottingham Trent University and Cranfield University through a previous DHS-funded project.
