DOE Selects Siemens for Microgrid Energy Mgmt System R&D Project

Siemens' U.S. research and development business unit has received a $6.4M contract to help the Department of Energy build a system to manage distributed energy resources.

Princeton, N.J.-based Siemens Corporate Technology aims to create an energy management system that will use tools designed to increase the resilience of microgrids and facilitate autonomous power restoration as part of the Autonomous and Resilient Operation of Energy systems with RenewaAbles or AURORA project.

Ulrich Muenz and Sindhu Suresh will lead the project in collaboration with DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory,  Columbia University and Holy Cross Energy.

Earlier this year, Siemens CT signed a memorandum of understading with NREL as well as the Oak Ridge and Pacific Northwest national laboratories to study the possibility of integrating the electric grid with power electronic devices such as solar panel, battery and electrical vehicle inverters.
