Iridium Communications has received a Mobile Satellite Users Association award for a satellite-powered global broadband service that facilitates wireless communications for government agencies, enterprises and individuals.

The company said Tuesday its Certus offering was named the Top Connected Platform during MSUA's Mobility Satellite Innovations Awards program at the SATELLITE 2019 event.

Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium and a 2019 Wash100 winner, said the firm's commercial partners are scheduled to receive the Certus 9770 transceiver later this year.

Desch added he believes the technology will open the door for a new suite of devices that are intended for mobile applications, including personal gadgets that can process data streams, videos and images.

Iridium has authorized three Certus satcom terminals designed to support on-the-move mobile connectivity for deployed personnel as well as two-way remote communications for autonomous vehicles, ships, trains or assets.

The company also started efforts to update the service for satellite, terrestrial, aviation and maritime safety applications.
