The U.S. Navy is seeking potential contractors for the design and construction of its multimission FFG(X) guided missile frigates, which are to operate in coastal and deep water environments to provide support for air, anti-submarine, surface and electronic warfare.

A FedBizOpps request for proposals issued Thursday by The Naval Sea Systems Command details the requirements for the planned full and open competition, and the Navy expects to select a single company in fiscal year 2020 for the construction of the first 10 ships.

The Navy aims to award a separate contract in mid-2020s for the second batch of the frigates in an effort to meet its full requirement of 20 FFG(X)s.

This program is part of the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act that seeks a fleet of 355 ships for the Navy.

An industry day was held in March where the Navy collected initial industry feedback on the draft RFP for the FFG(X) program.

Austal USA, Fincantieri Marinette Marine, General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works, Huntington Ingalls Industries and Lockheed Martin received contracts in 2018 to create conceptual design for the FFG(X).
