Nonprofit charity organization Disabled American Veterans has selected Huntington Ingalls Industries as large employer of the year in recognition of the company’s veteran hiring initiatives.

HII’s award comes as part of the 98th DAV and Auxiliary National Convention, which took place last week in Orlando, Fla., the company said Thursday.

Bill Ermatinger, executive vice president and chief human resource officer for HII, said the firm is “steadily focused” on its efforts to recruit, train and retrain veterans across the HII enterprise.

“We are honored to be recognized by DAV for our efforts to serve those who have served us,” he added.

HII has recruiters in its three divisions that focus specifically on veteran recruitment. According to the company, more than 18 percent of its 41K-employee workforce is comprised of veterans.

DAV has over 1.3K chapters and 1M members throughout the country that work to assist veterans in matters such as benefit claims and medical appointment support.
