A group of state attorneys general and voice service providers have agreed to implement principles aimed at preventing robocalls or illegal calls associated with telemarketing and consumer fraud.

As part of the agreement, the participating voice service providers will apply eight tactics such as providing free call blocking and labeling services, identifying patterns in network traffic, confirming the identity of commercial customers and cooperating in traceback investigations as well as other law enforcement activities.

According to the document, robocalls are the primary cause of consumer complaints received by the offices of state attorneys general, the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission. The agreement’s private sector signatories include AT&T, CenturyLink, Comcast, T-Mobile and Verizon.
