Northrop Grumman has placed a $31.9M initial order for components and subsystems from Saab to carry out full-rate production of the U.S. Marine Corps' Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar.

Saab said Monday it could provide additional assembly sets to the G/ATOR program, for which Northrop is the prime contractor, if the latter company exercises a contract option.

Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab's U.S. defense and security business, said the company aims to demonstrate its local manufacturing capacity to support radar technology FRP efforts.

USMC awarded Northrop a potential $958M contract in June to build and deliver 30 multimission radars, designated as AN/TPS-80.

The surveillance technology is designed to recognize airborne threats such as cruise missiles and manned and unmanned vehicles.
