Fairbanks Morse has secured a purchase order of an undisclosed sum from Lockheed Martin to manufacture two main propulsion diesel engines for a U.S. Navy Freedom-class littoral combat ship.

Lockheed will integrate two 16-cylinder Colt-Pielstick PA6B Sequentially Turbo Charged engines into USS Cleveland, or LCS 31, to equip the vessel with a non-variable turbocharging capability, Fairbanks Morse said Thursday.

The engines are designed to provide 12 megawatts of power and help LCS 31 meet mid-range speed propulsion and low-speed cruising requirements.

Fairbank Morse has supported the Navy for more than 70 years through the provision of marine propulsion systems. The company noted it has installed various engine systems on around 80 percent of the service branch’s fleet.
