An Idemia-developed algorithm has recorded over 95 percent accuracy during a Department of Homeland Security exercise aimed at assessing the capacity of facial recognition technology in identifying masked individuals.

Idemia said Monday its algorithm also achieved a True Identification Rate of over 99.5 percent of subjects not wearing masks as part of the DHS Science and Technology Directorate’s 2020 Biometric Technology Rally.

The company also recorded achievements for biometric performance and user experience during the Rally.

Participants’ biometric acquisition systems worked to process biometric images of a volunteer group to determine their capacity to produce accurate results for applications such as airport security and vetting procedures at other points of entry.

Lisa Sullivan, vice president of transportation at Idemia, said the company’s performance builds on its more than 40 years of experience supporting border control, civil identity and public security efforts.

Idemia expects its biometrics concept to support potential contactless operations amid precautionary measures for mask-wearing.
