The U.S. Army has awarded separate contracts to BAE Systems and an Oshkosh DefenseST Engineering partnership to develop prototypes of a military ground vehicle intended for missions in the Arctic environment, Defense News reported Monday.

The report said the Army set a June 14 deadline for the delivery of Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicle prototypes the branch intends to assess during the second half of the year at a testing center in Alaska.

Defense News quoted Tim Goddette, program executive officer for combat support and combat service support at the Army, as saying the branch aims to select a CATV manufacturer in the third quarter of fiscal 2022.

The CATV platform is intended to replace the branch’s Small Unit Support Vehicle, accommodate up to nine passengers and transport general cargo, according to the publication.

BAE proposed the Beowulf tracked vehicle, built by the British defense company’s Hagglunds business, to the Army last year.

Oshkosh Defense said its CATV offering is based on ST Engineering’s Bronco 3 all-terrain tracked carrier.
