Executive Spotlight: Amentum CEO John Vollmer - top government contractors - best government contracting event

John Vollmer, CEO of Amentum and 2022 Wash100 Award recipient, recently spoke with ExecutiveBiz for the publication’s latest Executive Spotlight interview regarding the impact of key acquisitions such as DynCorp in 2021 and the latest acquisition of PAE driving the company to transformational growth.

In addition, Vollmer discussed how Amentum has been able to grow in scale for federal agencies and the intelligence community as well as receiving a recent $462 million Navy contract and the environmental management programs to support DOE’s most significant initiatives.

“The acquisition of PAE has made Amentum the second largest provider of services to the government, with more than 50,000 people and a total combined revenue of more than $9 billion in 2021. We have the capability and the capacity to address the most critical programs of national significance for our clients.”

ExecutiveBiz: Congrats on a great 2021 for Amentum! How did new contracts and the acquisition of DynCorp lead to transformational growth and operational excellence for the company? How will that momentum continue into 2022?

John Vollmer: “It was an amazing year for Amentum! We started off the year having just completed our first transformational acquisition, which took us from a $4 billion company to a $6 billion-plus company before our first birthday.

We were focused on strategic opportunities that resulted in several large awards, such as aviation services supporting Customs and Border Protection and environmental cleanup work at the Oak Ridge Reservation and Savannah River Site.

In addition, we won positions on new contract vehicles and stood up new capabilities such as our Model Based Systems Engineering Collaboration Center, and implemented new technology solutions such as our Weapons as a Sensor Platform.

This focus on innovation will propel us into 2022 and set us apart as we continue to enhance our focus and our solutions on our clients’ most critical missions.”

ExecutiveBiz: With the acquisition of PAE officially closed, how will the acquisition allow Amentum to grow in scale and in its capabilities with federal agencies and the intelligence community?

John Vollmer: “Let’s talk about scale first. The acquisition of PAE has made Amentum the second largest provider of services to the government, with more than 50,000 people and a total combined revenue of more than $9 billion in 2021. We have the capability and the capacity to address the most critical programs of national significance for our clients.

In terms of capabilities, Amentum will deepen its existing customer relationships at the Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, NASA and will allow us to bring additional capabilities as we continue to grow our intelligence and technology business.

Examples of these capabilities that represent growing Federal budget priorities include synthetic training, sensor-based technologies, intelligence, cyber and IT, spectrum and electronic warfare, space operations, environmental solutions, asset management, and mission support.”

ExecutiveBiz: Congrats on the recent $462M Navy contract! What can you tell us about the “unique” aspect of the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) and how it will help the service branch with its deep-water range operations and services?

John Vollmer: “AUTEC is a contract that we are really excited about. Amentum has been the largest provider of test and training range support for several years as a result of our decades-long history at Air Force and Navy ranges.

Through this contract, the Navy will be well-served by our proven experience creating innovative range solutions in range infrastructure and operations. AUTEC presents some interesting challenges due to the geographic locations involved, but we’ve created a great program to ensure that we can get the resources on site and attract the key personnel to deliver success.”

ExecutiveBiz: With the recent Oak Ridge Reservation, Savannah River Site and Y-12 Pantex contracts, how will Amentum’s work with these agencies contribute to environmental management programs and cleanup to support DOE’s most significant initiatives to address our nation’s challenges in this area?

John Vollmer: “We had an extremely successful first quarter of our fiscal year at Amentum.

The contracts you mentioned, totaling $57 billion in total contract value, enable Amentum to maintain our leadership position in the DOE Environmental Management market and positions us to expand our role in maintaining a strategic deterrent in support of our national security.

We feel our respective teams have unmatched capabilities and we are committed to partnering with our DOE client to deliver world class expertise and solutions to safely accomplish these vital national missions.”
