IBM and Red Hat have joined a collaborative effort to provide the Department of Education with open hybrid cloud technologies to replace its G5 grants management system.

The five-year, joint modernization effort led by Innosoft is aimed at reducing complex department operations and enhancing grants management processes with flexible cloud-based system, IBM said Thursday.

Once the update is complete, the grant platform will feature user-centered design, Agile methodologies as well as artificial intelligence, machine learning and other applications and collaboration tools to help with the decision making. It will also be able to incorporate tech advancements.

IBM’s consulting business will assist in data consolidation and migration from the existing grants management systems to the Amazon Web Services platform while Red Hat will provide its OpenShift technology to serve as base for application development and deployment.

“With Red Hat OpenShift as the underlying platform for their modernized grants management system, the U.S. Department of Education will have one unified method for developing and deploying applications across hybrid cloud environments, enabling the department to deliver great digital experiences with flexibility and speed,” said Clara Conti, vice president and general manager of Red Hat’s North America Public Sector and a 2022 Wash100 Award recipient.
