Lockheed Taps BAE for New Ballistic Missile Seeker Tech Development - top government contractors - best government contracting event

Lockheed Martin has awarded BAE Systems a contract to design and produce a new seeker technology for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, a weapon developed by Lockheed to help military customers intercept ballistic missile threats.

The seeker will be equipped with BAE’s infrared technology to guide THAAD in threat engagement and warhead shootdown, the company said Tuesday.

Greg Procopio, director of precision guidance and sensing solutions at BAE, said the company will work to increase the interceptor’s ability to defend against high-speed missiles.

“We’re anticipating the capabilities of tomorrow’s ballistic missiles and designing adaptable electronic systems to counter those threats,” he added.

BAE noted its THAAD seeker has the potential to recognize enemy missiles progressing at a speed of up to 17,000 miles per hour.

Work will be conducted at the company’s electronic systems production facilities in New York, Alabama and New Hampshire.
