NASA’ first uncrewed flight test to the moon’s orbit will carry an astronaut vest from a Lockheed MartinStemRad team as one of the mission payloads.

The AstroRad garment that will be part of Artemis I is designed to protect human organs at high risk of harmful radiation exposure during space exploration, the International Space Station National Laboratory said Thursday.

Oren Milstein, CEO and chief scientific officer of StemRad, said combining previous user feedback on a prototype and data from the moon mission will allow the company to make improvements to the vest.

Northrop Grumman’s 12th mission in 2019 under the Commercial Resupply Services program included the ISS National Laboratory-sponsored test of the radiation shielding vest at the orbiting laboratory.
