The General Services Administration has awarded Southern Company a potential $117 million contract to help GSA meet energy efficiency and resilience goals for a dozen federal facilities located in Georgia.

The company said Tuesday its Atlanta Gas Light and PowerSecure subsidiaries will carry out the project, which involves replacing 60,000 light fixtures with LED lamps as well as modernizing direct digital controls and heating and ventilation systems.

Southern Company added it will use a $944,000 Department of Energy grant to incorporate the use of reclaimed water inside the buildings. Utility rebates worth $900,000 will be applied.

The partnership with GSA aims to reduce operating expenses in the 12 buildings by approximately 45 percent and help the agency save approximately $3.3 million in energy and water costs annually.

Building system enhancements are projected to reduce energy consumption by 40 to 50 percent and lower greenhouse gas emissions by 18,000 to 21,000 metric tons per year.

Locations of facilities covered by the agreement are metro Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Valdosta, Macon and Brunswick.

The company plans to finish contract work sometime in 2024.
