Alan Merten, the late president of George Mason University who passed away in 2020, was among the recipients of the Technology Good Scout Award from the National Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was presented with the recognition in 2012.

The fifth Mason president held the post for over 15 years. During his tenure, the university’s enrollment grew from 24,000 in 1996 to more than 33,000 in 2012 while its annual budget quadrupled to $880 million before he retired. Merten put emphasis on business administration, engineering, information technology and public policy.

In an interview with The Washington Post in 2011, Merten said, “The George Mason story is a story of making things happen faster than universities normally do things. We have an approach that says, ‘Do something in a hurry and then correct it, because it’s never going to be perfect.”

Merten also served on business and government councils and committees.

ExecutiveBiz featured Alan Merten as part of Executive Mosaic media group’s coverage of Good Scouts who were recognized for their impacts in the tech sector and demonstration of scouting values.

The BSA National Capital Area Council’s 2022 award luncheon event will take place on Nov. 2 at the Tysons Corner Marriott hotel in Virginia to honor LMI President and CEO Doug Wagoner.
