NASA has partnered with Amazon Web Services to provide free access to climate data for scientific researchers to assess and manage climate change.

The collaboration is part of the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative to launch the NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections dataset on the AWS Cloud, according to a public sector blog entry posted Friday on AWS’ website.

Manil Maskey, a NASA senior research scientist, and Ana Pinheiro Privette, head of sustainability for AWS Impact Computing, jointly wrote in their blog post the NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 projections can broaden public understanding of future climate patterns down to the level of towns, cities and watersheds.

They added that such data can lead to more information about the effects of local topography and other factors on weather conditions.

To create the NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 dataset, the agency gathered downscaled scenarios from simulation runs developed as part of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The projections include daily scenarios from climate model simulations run through the Earth System Grid Federation Peer-to-Peer open-source system.

NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 can be obtained in NETCDF or cloud-optimized geotiff formats and is restricted to scientific use.

Maskey and Privette encourage potential users to apply for ASDI cloud grants to be able to analyze the information on the AWS Cloud.
