A National Security Space Launch mission, called U.S. Space Force-67, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket took off Sunday from a launch complex at Kennedy Space Center in Florida to field two satellites into orbit.
The USSF-67 mission includes the Continuous Broadcast Augmenting SATCOM 2 satellite from Space Systems Command and the Long Duration Propulsive ESPA-3A spacecraft, SSC said.
The CBAS-2 satellite is headed for the geosynchronous orbit to provide military satellite communication capabilities for combatant commanders and senior leaders.
LDPE-3A includes the catcher and WASSAT payloads from SSC and three Space Rapid Capabilities Office payloads meant to improve situational awareness and provide space-to-ground communications capability.
USSF-67 is the second NSSL mission performed using Falcon Heavy and the first SpaceX mission ordered under the service branch’s NSSL Phase 2 contract awarded in 2020.
In November, SpaceX first used its Falcon Heavy rocket to launch the USSF-44 mission.
