SAIC Defense & Civilian President Bob Genter Shares Top GovCon Trends and Their Impacts - top government contractors - best government contracting event

The government contracting industry has long been defined by fluctuation and constant change; in recent years, that change has seemed to accelerate, driven by factors such as the global pandemic, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical developments and more.

In an exclusive video interview with Bob Genter, president of SAIC’s defense and civilian sector, Executive Mosaic set out to uncover the major trends and shifts impacting the GovCon ecosystem and find out how they’re shaping the future of the industry.

“The largest challenge that I think the entire industry has and the country has right now has to do with debt,” said Genter, a 2023 Wash100 Award recipient.

“The cost of debt — debt servicing — is going up, the scale of the debt is up, it causes a national security issue that we have to deal with, but it also has a tactical issue that has to be dealt with, and that is that it will consume more and more of the budget,” he explained in conversation with Executive Mosaic’s Summer Myatt.

Solving the debt issue, Genter said, will either involve raising the budget or taking a closer look at how to prioritize the money. But this tough conversation also opens up new opportunities for organizations to focus more on “doing things efficiently.”

Genter said now, as GovCon companies adjust their lenses and prioritize efficiency, more funding, time, effort and resources are going toward the actual delivery of the need, versus some of the more administrative functions and oversight. This trend is unlocking more resources within the Department of Defense and other federal agencies that can go toward higher priorities like advanced weapons systems, Genter explained.
