GlobalFoundries, a company manufacturing essential semiconductors, has revealed plans for launching an advanced packaging and photonics center in New York.

The company said Friday the center is intended to enhance advanced packaging, assembly and testing of GF’s silicon photonics and other U.S.-made essential chips utilized for artificial intelligence, communications, automotive, aerospace and defense.

The New York manufacturing facility is meant to enhance GF’s advanced packaging capabilities and bolster the supply of silicon photonics and other essential chips. The project, supported by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the State of New York, aims to facilitate the complete production of semiconductors domestically from manufacturing to packaging and to testing.

The company will invest an estimated $575 million for the new center while an additional $186 million will be utilized for R&D. The state of New York will invest $20 million, which is separate from the $ 550 million provided by the New York State Green CHIPS program. The Commerce Department also awarded $75 million to GF.

The project is expected to generate around 100 new jobs in New York over the next five years.

Thomas Caulfield, president and CEO of GF, said, “The New York Advanced Packaging and Photonics Center will be unique in our industry and will play a vital role in the continued growth of the Empire State’s world-class semiconductor manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.”
