Deploying private 5G networks is key to enabling warfighting training at sprawling U.S. military bases, according to a recent opinion column from Nokia. The column says that not only does private wireless provide connectivity for training being conducted across a large facility, it also provides the bandwidth needed to replicate real-world scenarios, including the use of virtual reality and augmented reality and controlling unmanned vehicles.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has selected 14 companies for a seven-month capability study that seeks to develop technology concepts to advance an integrated, multiservice commercial lunar infrastructure. Under the 10-Year Lunar Architecture Capability Study, the companies will collaborate to design systems-level platforms spanning multiple lunar services, including lunar power; communications, navigation and timing; mining and commercial in-situ resource utilization; construction and robotics; and transit, mobility and logistics, DARPA said Tuesday.

A Cubic company has received a three-year contract worth approximately $10 million to help the Department of Defense develop a lightweight and compact dual-band transceiver for military 5G networks. Cubic Nuvotronics, which falls under the mission and performance solutions segment, secured the award through the National Spectrum Consortium and will build a  low size, weight and power 5G wireless network communications transceiver to support the DOD’s “5G to Next G” effort, Cubic said Wednesday.
