Iridium has announced its second quarter 2020 financial results on Tuesday, reporting a net loss of $12.4 million, compared to net loss of $18.1 million for the second quarter of 2019. The company’s operational EBITDA for the second quarter was $85.3 million, compared to $85.1 million for the prior-year period.

Iridium Communications has awarded Relativity Space a contract to perform up to six on-demand launches to deliver ground spare satellites to low-Earth orbit.

The International Maritime Organization has authorized Iridium Communications to provide Global Maritime Distress and Safety System satellite services for the UN agency’s maritime emergency operations.

Iridium Communications CEO Matt Desch said he believes the industry needs new regulations that would mitigate failed satellites and other space debris in orbit, Space Intel Report reported Wednesday. Desch, a 2019 Wash100 winner, said those regulations should include a policy that would ground satellite and rocket developers in the event of an in-orbit failure and require them to determine the cause of the problem.
