Maximus has agreed to purchase Veterans Evaluation Services' (VES) parent company for $1.4 billion in support of its long-term corporate strategy for revenue growth and ongoing strategic priority of expanding footprint in the U.S. federal market. The acquisition, which is subject to U.S. antitrust filing requirements and customary closing conditions, is expected to close during Maximus' third fiscal quarter, the company said Wednesday.

MaryAnn Monroe, senior director of customer engagement solutions and services at Maximus’ federal arm, said agencies must ensure visibility and human elements when implementing self-service technologies driven by artificial intelligence. Monroe wrote in an opinion piece published Monday that live representatives remain essential even as more citizens engage with government agencies through digital platforms.

Maximus announced on Thursday its appointment of Teresa “Terry” Weipert as general manager of the company’s U.S. Federal Services Segment. Weipert will replace the retiring previous Wash100 Award recipient Thomas Romeo. Romeo will stay with the company until July to assist with the transition and then serve on Maximus’ advisory board.

Larry Reagan, a vice president at Maximus’ federal arm, wrote in a commentary published Thursday on Federal News Network that there are a number of factors the IRS should consider as it implements the Taxpayer First Act and the first is taking a “pragmatic approach to modernization.”

Maximus has completed its $430 million acquisition of the federal division of Attain. Attain Federal will become a part of Maxar’s U.S. Federal Services Segment. Baird served as exclusive financial advisor and Holland & Knight served as legal counsel to Attain while Hogan Lovells served as legal counsel to Maximus. 

Raj Parameswaran, president of U.S. federal information technology at Maximus, said robotic process automation could help government agencies facilitate the delivery of services to citizens while allowing employees to focus on more complex tasks. “RPA will continue to grow as a valuable tool for government IT leaders because it allows the immediate expansion and scaling of human labor without impacting existing systems,” Parameswaran wrote in a guest piece published Friday on GCN.

Laura Klebanow, a senior manager at Maximus, wrote in a Nextgov guest piece published Wednesday that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted government information technology modernization trends such as cloud migration and IT contracting in general.

Maximus has launched Maximus Public Health (MPH) to provide resources to help remediate COVID-19 and other public health threats for government agencies. To support the new division, Maximus has added five additional public health professionals to establish the MPH mission and structure. MPH will collaborate with academic partners, conduct research and expand partnerships with public health agencies.
