Inmarsat and Singapore-based communications firm Addvalue Innovation have introduced a service to facilitate data transfer between low-Earth orbit small satellites and ground stations. The partnership commissioned the Inter-satellite Data Relay System service Nov. 12 on Sequoia, a Capella Space synthetic aperture radar microsatellite, and launched the IDRS offering after completion of a live data connectivity demonstration, Inmarsat said Monday.

Inmarsat is seeking to meet increased U.S. military and commercial demand for more bandwidth in the Middle East and Europe with its Global Xpress 5 communications satellite, C4ISRNET reported Thursday. “GX5, adding to that mix, looks at an area where we’ve got increased and significant demand. It is a very, very dense environment for commercial as well as military," said Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, senior vice president of government strategy and policy at Inmarsat Government.

Inmarsat has selected Airbus’ defense and space business to develop three next-generation satellites for its Global Xpress satellite network. Inmarsat said Thursday the production of GX7, GX8 and GX9 satellites is part of the company’s move to expand its mobile broadband coverage worldwide, improve ability to incorporate future technology platforms and provide agility in space deployment.
