Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) announced on Wednesday that Michael Scruggs, previously with IBM, has joined the company as its new senior vice president of Artificial Intelligence (AI), effective immediately. Scruggs will lead SAIC’s expansion and innovation in the areas of predictive analytics, machine learning, robotic process automation, and intelligent edge.

Raytheon Technologies' intelligence and space business will award a combined amount of $400,000 to academic partners for artificial intelligence development initiatives that will focus on augmenting military defense systems and continue through 2022. Southern Methodist University and Virginia Tech will receive $175,000 and $225,000, respectively, to develop AI and machine learning technologies applicable to military operations, Raytheon said Tuesday.

The Northrop Grumman-built SharkSat payload collected and transmitted performance and telemetry data back to mission controllers while orbiting the Earth during a two-week demonstration aboard the company’s Cygnus spacecraft in January. “SharkSat’s success directly reflects the speed and agility that our team put forth to deliver mission success,” said Candace Givens, vice president of payload and ground systems division at Northrop.

Raytheon Technologies executives have said the company is applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the company's technology offerings in a push to help military customers process intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data faster. “We’re looking at how machine learning can augment our existing sensor product lines and the question is: "How can we utilize machine learning technology to help military commanders make decisions?" said Shane Zabel, AI technology area director for Raytheon's intelligence and space business.
