A unit of Kongsberg’s defense and aerospace business has received a contract from Los Alamos National Laboratory to build another satellite for LANL’s Experiment for Space Radiation Analysis mission. Kongsberg NanoAvionics said Wednesday it will make some mechanical arrangements to configure one of its 12U satellite buses to enable the spacecraft to host payloads for the ESRA mission.

Sierra Space has built and tested a full-scale version of an inflatable structure at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center as part of its efforts to develop commercial space stations. Robert Conrad, vice president of U.S. business development at Kepler Communications, told Breaking Defense in an interview published Monday that optical communications capabilities could help warfighters speed up the decision-making process to ensure national security by gaining access to remote sensing satellite data in near-real time.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded Sierra7 a contract to help the Office of Information Technology Privacy Services conduct privacy impact assessments for data within the VA's electronic information systems. Sierra7 said Wednesday the PIA tracking contract will support Privacy Services in assessing privacy risks in information systems that collect and store personally identifiable information and protected health information data.
