HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division has finished the initial sea trials for the Virginia-class attack submarine USS New Jersey. The trials, spanning several days, included testing the boat’s systems and components, submerging the vessel for the first time as well as executing high-speed maneuvers both on the surface and while submerged, HII said Thursday.
MoreHII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division started topside testing of the electromagnetic aircraft launch system on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. EMALS is designed to replace the steam catapults on the U.S. Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, can operate at a speed of more than 150 miles per hour and works to provide expanded operational capability, more accurate end-speed control and higher launch-energy capacity, HII said Wednesday.
MoreHII's Newport News Shipbuilding division collaborated with General Dynamics Electric Boat and advanced marine components manufacturer Ammcon to employ 3D printing in the production of parts for nuclear-powered submarines. GDEB and Ammcon helped NNS create a copper-nickel deck drain assembly that was later installed on the Virginia-class submarine Oklahoma.
