In March 2018, the California Department of General Services awarded an estimated $520 million design-build contract for the California Natural Resources Agency and other state offices, including the Departments of Water Resources, Fish and Wildlife, and Parks and Recreation.

The new headquarters, called the New Natural Resources Headquarters, was designed to provide technical and collaboration space for government functions for California’s environment and natural resources and to support employee wellness.

The work includes upgrades to the exterior of the Heilbron House and the building of a childcare center.
