In August 2015, the Oshkosh Defense subsidiary was awarded a $6.7 billion contract, which could reach up to $30 billion if 55,000 vehicles were to be produced. Under the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Program, Oshkosh manufactured and delivered the initial batch of 16,901 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) to replace the U.S. Army and Marine Corps aging Humvee.

In September 2016, Oshkosh delivered its initial production of JLTVs to the U.S. Army. In FY 2019, the company achieved the full-rate production milestone. In FY 2021, the U.S. Army increased the contract ceiling from 16,901 to 23,163 vehicles. 

In creating the JLTVs, the U.S. Army and Marine Corps were able to recover and even improve their vehicle performance. These upgrades also helped protect troops from many explosives in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In February 2021, the U.S. Postal Service awarded Oshkosh Defense a contract with a maximum value of $11 billion. The 10-year IDIQ agreement requires Oshkosh to supply the first batch of 5,000 next-generation postal trucks, including 10,019 battery-electric versions. This purchase order could go up to 165,000 vehicle units. The company converted its warehouse in South Carolina to a factory to build the delivery vehicles and employ over 1,000 people. 

The initiative is a part of the Biden administration’s green-energy procurement strategy with a vision of having zero-emission electric vehicles by 2035.

3. U.S. Army’s Stryker Armaments Production Contract, $943 Million

In June 2021, Oshkosh Defense won a contract award with a potential value of $943 million. Under the Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle contract, Oshkosh will produce, engineer, upgrade, field, and provide logistics services for the Stryker Medium Caliber Weapon System vehicles. This award marks the Oshkosh defense segment’s entrance into the adjacent combat vehicles market. Oshkosh Defense will work with Pratt Miller and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems (Israel) to integrate 30mm medium caliber weapons into the troop carriers.

Enhancing the Stryker Double V Hull Infantry Carrier Vehicle brings precision lethality capabilities to the Army’s three  Stryker Brigade Combat Teams. The initial delivery order is worth $130 million and includes 19 vehicles. The contract value will reach its maximum if the Army receives up to six stryker Brigades within six years.

In December 2020, Oshkosh announced that the U.S. Army awarded an estimated $911 million contract, the second-largest order JLTVs received by Oshkosh Defense. Over 2700 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs), associated kits, and 1000 companion trailers will be produced for all military branches, including selected NATO and non-NATO allies (North Macedonia, Lithuania, and Brazil). These vehicles allow Oshkosh Defense to cater to its clients’ ever-changing needs with advanced mobility systems and next-generation defense technologies.

On June 19, 2015, the U.S. Army awarded an estimated $780 million contract to Oshkosh Defense. Under the HEMTT contract, Oshkosh stripped the Army’s 1,363 Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTTs) to the frame and reassembled them on the current production line of vehicles. The battle-worn heavy tactical wheeled trucks were upgraded to Oshkosh’s latest model, HEMTT A4, with advanced safety features to improve mobility and reliability. Oshkosh also manufactured 1000 new trailers for the military’s palletized load system, 1,022 new palletized load system trailers, ancillary items, and specialty kits.

In February 2018, Oshkosh received a $472 million contract award from the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM). Under the FMTV A2 production contract, Oshkosh was tasked to build vehicles composed of 16 models and associated trailers capable of carrying a payload of up to 10 tons and supporting supply operations, combat, logistics, and relief. The upgraded FMTV A2 vehicles are created to improve ride quality, safety, diagnostics, engine power, electronics, mobility, and safety.

In September 2022, Oshkosh Defense secured a $263 million contract from the U.S. Army to supply an estimated 466 equipment trailer vehicles, including support and logistics product services, through 2027. The initial order requires Oshkosh to deliver five test trailers and 68 production trailers for verification, testing, and engineering and logistics development.

These new trailer systems can transport the U.S. Army heaviest tracked vehicles and trucks weighing up to 90 tons. Oshkosh’s subcontractor, Broshuis B.V., will provide support for this project.

In March 2019, Oshkosh Defense was awarded a $75 million contract by the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC). Under the FMTV A2 program, Oshkosh was required to manufacture 354 units of family medium tactical vehicle A1P2 trucks and trailers. The Oshkosh vehicles were handled by the company’s defense team of experts and equipped with a full range of training and sustainment services for the fleet’s quality and preparedness.

Is Oshkosh a Defense Contractor?

Oshkosh has a wholly owned subsidiary, Oshkosh Defense, a global leader in manufacturing, designing, and sustaining military vehicles and mobility systems. In the fiscal years 2019, 2020, and 2021, the company reported 24, 35, and 33% of its net sales from the U.S. government. Most of them were under multi-year programs and contracts in the defense vehicle market.

Aside from leveraging its current tactical wheeled vehicle business and staying competitive in the contracting industry, Oshkosh Defense continues to develop new applications for its vehicle products and service expansion.
