ExOne to Deliver Self-Contained 3D Printing Pod to DOD

The Department of Defense has awarded ExOne a $1.6 million contract to create a 3D printing facility capable of additively manufacturing replacement and spare parts from metal, ceramic or composite materials while operating in a shipping container. ExOne said Tuesday it will provide a self-contained 3D printing setup that would allow the military to produce parts based on digital files or 3D scanned equipment in less than 48 hours to cut manufacturing time and lessen costs.

Xerox 3D Printer to Support Manufacturing Research at Naval Postgraduate School

Xerox has provided a liquid metal 3D printer to Naval Postgraduate School under a cooperative research and development agreement to explore the potential use of such technology in developing systems for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Students and faculty members at NPS can use the Xerox ElemX additive manufacturing system for hands-on learning and dissertation work, the company said Wednesday.

A new Research and Markets forecast says increasing demand for new aircraft and use of unmanned aerial vehicles worldwide will be among the factors that will drive 3D printing growth in the aerospace sector over the next seven years. The global market for aerospace 3D printers reached a value of $1.12B last year and is projected to experience a 25.3 percent compound annual growth rate to hit $6.81B by 2027.

3D Systems to Back VHA’s Health Care Additive Manufacturing Effort

The Veterans Health Administration has tasked 3D Systems to help the government stand up additive manufacturing facilities at hospitals, where personnel would produce 3D-printed medical equipment. The company said Thursday it will deliver ProX SLS 6100 3D printers and related materials to establish the planned facilities and a corresponding quality management system for VHA.
