Huntington Ingalls Industries has christened an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer named after the Navy Cross' first female recipient in preparation for its introduction to the U.S. Navy fleet. DDG 123 or the future USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee underwent its christening in Pascagoula, Mississippi, with Ray Mabus, former Navy secretary, serving as the ceremony's keynote speaker, HII said Sunday.

A Huntington Ingalls Industries business unit has received a potential five-year, $74.7 million contract to help update payload for the U.S. Navy’s Mk 18 Mod 2 Kingfish unmanned underwater vehicles. HII’s Hydroid subsidiary will provide Increment II hardware for the Mk 18 Mod 2 UUV as part of the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division and 3D Systems have partnered to create Nickel-Copper and Copper-Nickel alloys that could support additive manufacturing of metal components for marine applications. The initiative includes designing process parameter experiments, selecting alloy compositions and determining applicable parts through material and tensile tests.

Huntington Ingalls Industries has finished construction of a 22K-square-foot building that will be part of the military shipbuilder's new campus in Hampton, Virginia, for the prototyping, manufacturing and testing of unmanned technology platforms. “Opening this initial facility immediately expands our unmanned systems capability and helps support the increasing needs of our customers who defend our national security,“ said Andy Green, president of HII's technical solutions division and two-time Wash100 Award recipient.
