Air Force SBIR, STTR Program to Launch First Call for FY 2021 Open Topics in Mid-January

The Air Force’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer program announced at the AFWERX Accelerate event that it will release the first open topic for fiscal year 2021 on Jan. 14, in coordination with the Department of Defense. The first open topic will run through Feb. 18 and the second and third open topics will be released respectively in May and September next year and close 30 days after.

Aptima-Owned Small Business to Refine Air Force Crew Safety Monitoring Tech

An Ohio-based startup company of Aptima will further develop technology the Air Force Research Laboratory designed to monitor the safety of aircraft maintainers who work in tight spaces. AFRL said Friday its 711th Human Performance Wing transitioned the Confined Space Monitoring System prototype to Sentinel Operational Security for final development, demonstration and potential commercialization under the Small Business Innovation Research program.

Denim Group to Help USAF Expedite Software Deployment Under SBIR Phase II Contract; John Dickson Quoted

Denim Group has secured a follow-on contract under the U.S. Air Force's AFWERX program to help the service branch speed up the accreditation and delivery of mission software through the use of a vulnerability resolution tool. The company said Tuesday its ThreadFix platform will move on to Phase II of AFWERX's Small Business Innovation Research program after demonstrating its potential to accelerate software development under the initial phase of the SBIR contract awarded in January.

Army Looks to Small Tech Firms to Increase Howitzer System’s Rate of Fire

The U.S. Army will move to solicit ideas from small businesses on how to fire projectiles from self-propelled howitzers at a faster rate under the branch's one-of-its kind effort designed to incentivize companies that support military technology modernization efforts. Interested vendors can submit proposals from Sept. 18 to Oct. 6 for the "Fire Faster" effort as part of the Special Program Awards for Required Technology Needs program, Army Futures Command said Tuesday.

Air Force, Hypergiant Partner to Build Satellites With Updatable Software

Hypergiant Industries and the U.S. Air Force have teamed up to develop a constellation of satellites that will use reprogrammable software to help operators adapt the space technology to match specific requirements, C4ISRNET reported Monday. The Austin, Texas-based company seeks to incorporate an architecture from the Air Force's Platform One software development team into a proposed 36-satellite Chameleon Constellation.
