Boeing is bringing back an old approach to use a joint direct attack munition as a lower-cost cruise missile for the U.S. Air Force, Flight Global reported Tuesday.

The company exhibited and discussed the Powered JDAM concept at the Air Force Association's Air Warfare Symposium last Friday.

The concept, originally created eight years ago, underwent a revival and further development over an 18-month period.

A Powered JDAM unit uses a lighter wing kit compared to that of the munition's glide variant, and features a small jet turbine engine to function as a cruise missile, the report noted.
